In the northern San Juan Basin of Colorado, the Dakota Formation, itself, is a non-tributory groundwater source.
It is not known what effect repeated glaciation East of the Continental Divide had upon the Dakota Sandstone's porosity and permeability, or upon its hydrological communication to help recharge the Morrison Formation.
Erosion of the Dakota Sandstone (Kd) and the Morrison Formation (J and Jm) is even evident along the Rio Chama and even more so southeasterly in the Rio Chama Watershed (e.g., above and in vicinity of Abiquiu Lake).
